Looking at Existing Lessons

The easiest way to start learning about lesson design is to download and use several of the lessons at the SMARTTECH website.  From the main page, go to Education, All Lesson Activities, and browse the Canadian lessons by subject or BC standards.

Be sure to check out the link on the Education Page to the new SB Math Tools!  You can watch the demo and download the Beta version if you are interested.

You can also find teacher-created SB lessons on many wikis, blogs, and websites.  Check my Diigo list of SB sites for suggestions.

About the Notebook Lesson Activity Toolkit

In the SMARTTECH Training Centre, (expand the Notebook Software section) you will find a short video tutorial and downloadable .pdf about the Lesson Activity Toolkit.

The Lesson Activity Toolkit (in the NB Gallery) contains professionally-designed title and lesson pages, game boards and pieces, graphics, interactive tools, and customizable interactive activities.

Title Pages

It's always a good idea to start with a Title Page, especially if you want to share the lesson with other teachers or make your lesson easier for a substitute teacher to use.  Expand the Lesson Activity Folder by clicking the plus sign, expand the Pages Folder, and choose the Title Pages Folder.  The Title Pages come in 6 different colours.  The plain pages on the left will add a single tabbed page to your NB file and the coiled version on the right will add two linked pages to your NB file.  Otherwise they are identical.

In order to change the white text, select it and change the text colour to black.  Select the text and change it back to white when you are finished.  You can't see your cursor when you enter the objects and other information.

Lesson Pages

Choose additional pages from the Lesson Pages Folder.  These include templates for blank pages, instructions, and question pages.  These are not self-checking, but you can edit some of the pages, e.g. the "sentence arrange" page.  On other pages, you can edit the "label" box which is infinitely-cloned.

Graphics

You can find additional graphics such as buttons, arrows, boxes, bars, borders, and pull tabs in the Graphics Folder.

For example, you could add a Back Arrow to a page, select it as an object, choose "link" from the drop down menu, and link the Back Arrow to another page.

You can add labels to a box or button by creating a text box, dragging it on top of the box or button, marquee selecting both items and grouping the two together.

Pull tabs are useful for decluttering a page, revealing information one piece at a time, or hiding additional examples, answer keys, or extension activities off the page.  Some of the Pull Tabs are editable and pinable (pin them in their off-page location so they return there when you click the arrow.)  Others are just handles for Pull Tabs.

To create a Pull Tab, use one of the Gallery Pull Tabs as a handle, create a text box, align it with the Pull Tab handle, marquee select both items and group them together.  You can also create Pull Tabs using any graphic from the Gallery as the handle.

For example, in Laurie's Potato Famine unit, she used potatoes as the pull-tab handles.  Here's a demo of super-cool way to use Pull Tabs that makes the items appear as if they are coming out of a box.  During our online session, Carmen said she used Pull Tabs for review, especially of items in a sequence and John described a lesson in which he used Pull Tabs to teach acrostic poetry.

Interactive Tools

There are also several NB Tools that you can drag onto your pages to add interactivity to your lessons.  These include several hide and reveal tools, checkers and question flippers, and random card, letter, number, and text generators.

Here's a Teacher Tube demo of how to use the Balloon Pop Tool.

Flash Activities and Games

The Activities and Games folders contain many self-checking editable flash files, e.g. multiple choice quiz, hot spots, category sorts, anagrams, word guess, and crosswords.  Just click the question mark for the instructions and the Edit arrows to add your own information to these activities and games.

Here's a Teacher Tube video of how to construct the Multiple Choice activity.

How-To Videos

If you are wondering how to use any of these tools or activities, check the Help Folder within the Examples Folder.  This folder contains many interactive links to videos that explain the tools and activities.

You can also go to Teacher Tube and search for a particular SB demo.

Best Practices for Using the SMARTBoard

As we explore more of the UDL Guidelines, I will add more info on best practices for using the SB for all students, especially those who have special needs.  I have summarized the ideas in a table that I will be developing into an interactive NB lesson.

Homework:

Download and use a SMART or teacher-created SB lesson or create your own, incorporating items from the Activity Toolkit into a SB lesson this week.  Comment below.  Here's my Salmon Life Cycle NB lesson.
